Job Title:  Scientific development manager
Job Location:  Saint-Rémy-de-Provence
Contract type:  Permanent
Job Description:

Function

As a member of the Applied Genetic Sciences (AGS) team, you will play a key role in advancing innovation across EMEA breeding programs. You will implement advanced breeding strategies, integrate predictive and data-driven tools, and ensure alignment between breeding and technology solutions. By working closely with breeders, AGS peers, and Trait & Technology (T&T) teams, you will help accelerate genetic gain and deliver measurable value to HM.CLAUSE programs.

This role requires a solid understanding of commercial breeding pipelines, quantitative genetics, and traditional decision-making processes, combined with curiosity and openness toward new analytical approaches. You will serve as both a learner and a teacher: a trusted partner to breeders who facilitates adoption of data-driven solutions, while connecting upstream tool developers with program needs to guide innovation and tool design.

This is a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact across R&D by bridging teams, shaping the future of breeding programs, and growing your career in a dynamic, and international environment.

This position reports to the Global AGS Team Lead and is based in France (preferably Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, with the option of Angers). Regular travel to breeding stations and collaboration sites is required.

Main Goal

Breeding Strategy & Innovation

You lead the implementation of innovative breeding strategies across EMEA programs, ensuring alignment with global R&D objectives. You facilitate exchanges between teams to encourage idea sharing and strategic convergence. You integrate approaches such as rapid cycling, predictive breeding, and data-driven tools into varietal development processes. You challenge existing breeding schemes and propose tailored evolutions based on program-specific needs.

Data Standards, Tools & User Experience

You support the adoption of global data standards and help foster a culture where data is seen as a performance driver. You translate breeder needs into clear functional specifications and guide tool development accordingly. You contribute to the design and testing of tools to enhance both user experience and decision quality.

Training, Adoption & Progress Monitoring

You promote the adoption of analytical routines by training breeding teams. You design educational materials and lead sessions to strengthen analytical skills. You assess the relevance of new solutions and dashboards for breeding applications. You define performance indicators (KPIs), monitor their adoption, and measure the impact of deployed tools.

What we expect of you

PhD or MSc in quantitative genetics, plant or animal breeding, statistics, or a related field.

Experience in designing breeding programs, marker-assisted selection, or genomic selection.

Proficiency in data management, analysis, and visualization tools (e.g., JMP, Spotfire, R).

Proven ability to collaborate across functions, cultures, and geographic regions.

Excellent communication, facilitation, and project management skills.

Strong analytical mindset, with the ability to challenge existing practices and drive innovation.

Ability to thrive in multicultural, dynamic, and demanding environments.
